Snowdrops will grow equally well on both acidic and alkaline soils, as long as it is well drained and reasonably fertile. They prefer semi-shade to full sun; they will not grow well in dense shade.
If possible prepare the planting site before your bulbs arrive. Dig in some organic matter (sieved leaf mould/garden compost) plus some coarse grit/sharp sand for drainage. If possible add a handful of bonemeal to the area.
Plant bulbs approx. 4 inches deep (or at least as deep as they have been grown i.e. up to the white parts of the leaves) and 3 inches between them. Water in well.
If the weather remains dry then they may need further watering.
Let the bulbs die down naturally. Dead heading, i.e. the removal of the seed pod, is a personal choice. On no account should the leaves be cut off.
Snowdrop clumps should be divided every three to four years. Dig up the clump carefully and tease apart the bulbs, by hand, trying not to break any roots. Re-plant immediately.
The plants will benefit from a top dressing of bonemeal and some organic matter every autumn.
